KIT 724: AR assignment

1.  Introduction:

Due in part to urbanization, many children do not have the opportunity to observe cattle or poultry, which reside in rural regions distant from urban areas. Recognizing this, such an application has been created so that toddlers may explore 3D chicken models using AR technology. Young children will have enjoyable interactions and experiences with chickens with this program.

2. Description of the application

Educating young children using 3D graphics is gaining popularity because 3D images make it possible to observe an object from several perspectives. Using AR technology, items may not only be observe, but they can also have motions and activities. The fact that augmented reality apps may be used on mobile devices is a major factor in their rising popularity. anyplace for less money than purchasing a virtual reality headset and being limited to a desktop experience that prevents you from leaving your desk because all your functions are tied to the headset.

Children, especially those under the age of 10, have a natural curiosity for knowledge and a strong capacity for memorisation, so it's no surprise that they're drawn to stories and images that are both engaging and exciting. Therefore, children will enjoy moving images and will retain what they find attractive, making information simpler to assimilate. The chicken was chosen for this application because children who have never gone to a farm have little to no chance to engage with the animals there. To aid young users in seeing and remembering the chickens in action, this app has been developed.

3. Interaction Design

Interactions are essential in this application to allow the users to observe and learn about a chickens’ movement and actions. The interactions in this AR application are all activated by button triggers, The three buttons, Move, Rotate and scale up let the user interact with the chickens in various ways. To better grasp the chicken's design, the user is able to see it from a variety of perspectives. Each of the four chickens serves a unique purpose. Two of them will animate in a fascinating way by simply turning on their own. You have one chicken that, when the "move" button is clicked, flies off the screen and surprises you, and another that, when you click the "route," spins around in a circle.

Use-case storyboard

This storyboard depicts a use case scenario of the chicken AR application being implemented as an educational tool. Students that are unable to gain access to materials of their chosen topics can use the augment reality to aid in their research. The interface features allow the user to have control experience a better experience than a video, mimicking closer to real-life observation.

4. Technical Development

Unity is utilised for the majority of the design process, in addition to animations and interactions, in order to create this application. AR and VR both have their own unique ways of working. If virtual reality (VR) is the interaction between the user and an Oculus, a VR headset to carry out the operation, then augmented reality (AR) requires an image plane, Target image, to be able to present 3D graphics on it. The target image after it has been entered into the Vuforia database, which is an augmented reality platform built on Unity, to do an analysis of the points on the image so that the camera can recognise the plane before displaying the 3D models. Then, assets from Unity, specifically a chicken, will be added to the application in order to build the image in three-dimensional space. However, that is not sufficient to finish the application. Please see the next sentence. It is important to create coding statements in C# script files in order for the chickens to be able to move and for players to be able to interact with them. As a consequence of this, the chickens are capable of activities such as Moving, Rotating, and Scaling Up.

However, because of various technical issues that arose throughout the process of designing the app, some of the capabilities are not entirely implemented. As was planned, there will be three primary functions, each of which will be controlled by one of three virtual buttons; however, only one of these buttons, the Route button, is currently reliable as demonstrated in the video. Despite the fact that not all of the functionality has been implemented, there has been no negative impact on the user experience.
